NEALL '97 PROPOSALS:
We welcome members to submit proposals for the delayed
NEALL 97 as outlined elsewhere in this Newsletter. This Spring's
Conference, March 14-16, will be hosted by Michael Jones at Swarthmore
College. We hope to be able to explore their new computer-based
language lab as well as see demonstrations from our broad membership
from our region and beyond.
Our annual conferences have become an important opportunity
for both lab staff and language faculty to see first hand new
programs and equipment being used within the teaching of foreign
language. Please plan to join your colleagues from the North East.
VENDOR COORDINATOR NEEDED:
For NEALL '97 we also need a volunteer to help organize
and coordinate vendor contributions to the conference. If you have
good contacts (or would like to develop some) with vendors, please
contact me at Temple University.
ROBERT HENDERSON MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTION:
Most of you may have already heard the sad news this past
July with the death of our IALL President, Robert Henderson. Robert
was the second NEALL President when our regional group was first
getting organized. I was able to attend a Memorial Service held
for Dr. Henderson at the Heinz Memorial Chapel at the University
of Pittsburgh on September 18th. It was attended by several hundred
colleagues and friends from that campus, his home town of Beaver
Falls and various friends from NEALL and IALL.
Robert Henderson contributed much to his profession and to our
own organizations. I attended the IALL Summer Meetings in Victoria
British Columbia as we prepared for the upcoming FLEAT III to
be held there August 12 - 16. Robert conducted these many sessions
to move the Association along on its development of programs as
well as details for the upcoming conference held in cooperation
with the Language Lab Association of Japan. His skills in managing
and gentle style of communicating with his colleagues and friends
will be sorely missed.
The NEALL Board has decided to contribute $250 to the Robert
T. Henderson Memorial Scholarship being established at the University
of Pittsburgh. If any individuals who knew and loved Bob would
like to contribute to the Fund, you may sends checks made out
to the "University of Pittsburgh" and indicate on your check "To
the Henderson Fund". Mail it to:

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR NEALL PRESIDENT ELECT
This past September, our duly elected President Elect,
Virginia Lewis, left Haverford College to take a new position back
in her native Texas. We must now elect a new President Elect before
our NEALL97 Meeting at Swarthmore.
Please send along your nominations for a new President Elect
to me by December 5th. We will then send out a Ballot in the next
Newsletter for your votes. This will be only a one year term as
President Elect to complete Virginia's term, with the office of
President to begin in 1998. Duties involve representing NEALL
on the IALL Council and attending summer meetings as well as the
IALL summer conferences (held alternate summers). The other duties
involve organizing our annual NEALL Conferences in conjun ction
with the host college. If you or someone you believe could serve
in this capacity, contact me by December 5th.
If you, or someone you would like to recommend, can serve in
this capacity, contact me by December 5th.
